Squint Surgery in Kurukshetra β€” Straighter Eyes, Better Vision, Any Age

Squint β€” or strabismus β€” is a misalignment of the eyes that affects both children and adults. Beyond the cosmetic concern, untreated squint in children can permanently damage vision in one eye. The good news: modern squint surgery is safe, effective, and achieves excellent results at any age β€” for children and adults alike.

Common Myths About Squint β€” Busted

These misconceptions stop parents from seeking timely help. Here is the truth.

βœ— "Children grow out of squint on their own"
βœ“ They do not. A true squint requires treatment. Delaying it risks permanent lazy eye and lost vision.
βœ— "Squint surgery is only cosmetic β€” not medically necessary"
βœ“ In children, it is medically essential. Untreated squint causes amblyopia β€” permanent vision loss in the turned eye.
βœ— "Adults cannot benefit from squint surgery"
βœ“ Squint surgery works at any age. Adults benefit enormously in terms of appearance, confidence, and sometimes double vision.
βœ— "Patching alone will fix the squint"
βœ“ Patching treats amblyopia (lazy eye) β€” but not the squint itself. Surgery is usually needed to align the eyes.

Understanding Squint

What Is Squint (Strabismus) and Why Does It Happen?

Squint β€” medically known as strabismus β€” is a condition where the two eyes do not point in the same direction. One eye may turn inward (esotropia), outward (exotropia), upward (hypertropia), or downward (hypotropia) while the other looks straight ahead.

In normal vision, both eyes work together as a team β€” sending slightly different images to the brain, which fuses them into a single 3D image. In squint, this teamwork breaks down. The brain, to avoid double vision, begins to suppress or ignore the image from the turned eye. Over time, particularly in children under 8, the suppressed eye loses its visual development β€” a condition called amblyopia or lazy eye.

This visual loss can become permanent if not treated before the visual system fully matures. This is why early detection and treatment are so important.

Esotropia β€” Eye turns inward

The most common type. One or both eyes turn toward the nose. Often associated with hyperopia (long-sightedness) in children.

Exotropia β€” Eye turns outward

One or both eyes turn away from the nose. May be intermittent initially β€” only appearing when the child is tired, unwell, or looking into the distance.

Hypertropia / Hypotropia β€” Eye turns vertically

One eye turns upward or downward. Less common. Often associated with nerve palsy or other underlying conditions requiring evaluation.

Intermittent Squint

The squint is only present some of the time β€” when tired, in bright light, or looking at distance. Still requires treatment before it becomes constant.

Why Early Treatment Matters

What Happens If Squint Is Left Untreated in Children

The visual system in children develops until approximately age 8. Within this window, treatment can restore normal vision. After it, some losses may be permanent.

🧠

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) Develops

The brain begins suppressing the image from the turned eye to avoid double vision. The visual pathways for that eye stop developing normally β€” causing permanent vision loss called amblyopia.

πŸ‘οΈ

Permanent Loss of 3D Vision

Stereopsis β€” the ability to perceive depth in 3D β€” requires both eyes working together. Untreated squint destroys this permanently. Even if the squint is corrected later, 3D vision may not recover.

πŸ“š

Academic & Developmental Impact

Poor vision in one eye affects reading, sport, and coordination. Many children with undetected squint are mislabelled as slow learners when the problem is simply that they cannot see properly.

πŸ˜”

Self-Confidence and Social Impact

A visible squint affects how children are perceived by peers and how they perceive themselves. Early treatment removes this burden during the most important years of social development.

⏰

Limited Window for Full Recovery

The visual system matures by age 7–8. Treatment before this age gives the best chance of full visual recovery. After this window, amblyopia becomes harder β€” sometimes impossible β€” to treat.

βœ…

Early Treatment = Full Recovery

Children treated early β€” with patching, glasses, and surgery β€” can achieve completely normal vision and binocular function. The earlier the intervention, the better the outcome.

πŸ’‘

When should a child first have their eyes checked for squint?

Any squint noticed in a child over 3–4 months of age should be evaluated promptly. For children with a family history of squint, screening at 1–2 years is recommended. All children should have a basic eye check before starting school. If you have any concern about your child's eye alignment at any age β€” come in. A check-up is quick, painless, and free of anxiety for the child.

Treatment Approach

How Squint Is Treated β€” Step by Step

Treatment is tailored to the child's age, the type of squint, and whether amblyopia is present. It often involves a combination of approaches.

01
Always First

Full Eye Examination & Refraction

A complete assessment under cycloplegic drops (which relax the focusing muscles) to determine the exact glasses prescription. Some squints β€” particularly inward turning in children β€” are partly or fully corrected by wearing the right glasses alone.

02
If Glasses Alone Insufficient

Amblyopia Treatment (Patching)

If one eye has developed amblyopia (lazy eye), the stronger eye is patched for a few hours each day β€” forcing the brain to use and develop the weaker eye. This is done before surgery to maximise the visual outcome from the operation.

03
Definitive Treatment

Squint Surgery

Surgery adjusts the length or position of the eye muscles responsible for eye movement β€” bringing the eyes into alignment. It is performed under general anaesthesia for children and can be done under local anaesthesia for cooperative adults. Most patients go home the same day.

04
Ongoing

Post-Operative Follow-Up

Regular follow-up checks in the weeks and months after surgery confirm alignment, monitor amblyopia treatment, and allow for any fine-tuning. In some cases, more than one surgery is needed to achieve the ideal result β€” this is not uncommon and does not indicate failure.

The Surgery

What Happens During Squint Surgery

Squint surgery is an extraocular procedure β€” the eyeball itself is not entered. The surgeon works on the muscles on the outside of the eye. It is safe, effective, and one of the most commonly performed eye surgeries in children worldwide.

1
Anaesthesia administered

General anaesthesia for children. Local anaesthesia or sedation for adults. No pain throughout.

2
Conjunctiva opened

A small opening is made in the thin membrane covering the white of the eye β€” the conjunctiva. No skin cuts.

3
Eye muscle adjusted

The responsible muscle is either weakened (recession β€” moved further back) or strengthened (resection β€” shortened). One or both eyes may be operated.

4
Conjunctiva closed

The small opening is closed with dissolving stitches. No eye patch needed. The child goes home the same day in most cases.

Not Just for Children

Squint Surgery Works for Adults Too

Many adults live with a squint they have had since childhood β€” sometimes told there is nothing to be done, sometimes never having sought treatment. This is not true. Squint surgery in adults is safe and highly effective. While the brain's visual pathways are fully mature (so amblyopia treatment does not apply), the alignment of the eyes can be corrected at any age β€” with significant benefits.

πŸ‘οΈ

Improved Eye Alignment

Surgery corrects the visible misalignment β€” often the primary reason adults finally seek treatment after years of living with squint.

🀝

Better Self-Confidence

The psychological impact of a corrected squint in adults is significant. Patients consistently report improved confidence in social and professional situations.

πŸ‘οΈβ€πŸ—¨οΈ

Relief from Double Vision

Adults who develop squint in later life often experience double vision (diplopia). Surgery can eliminate or significantly reduce this debilitating symptom.

🧠

Restored Binocular Function

In some adults β€” particularly those who had good alignment in childhood β€” surgery can restore partial binocular vision and depth perception.

😌

Relief from Eye Strain

Adults with intermittent squint often experience significant eye strain and headaches from the effort of keeping their eyes aligned. Surgery eliminates this effort.

Career & Social Benefits

Improved eye contact and appearance opens doors professionally and socially β€” outcomes consistently reported by adult squint surgery patients.

FAQs

Squint Surgery β€” Common Questions

At what age should squint surgery be done?
+
As early as possible once the squint is confirmed and stable. Many children have surgery between ages 1–4. Earlier surgery gives more time for the visual system to develop normally after alignment. However, squint surgery can be performed at any age β€” there is no upper age limit. The goals and expected outcomes differ between children and adults, which Dr. Sobti will explain clearly.
Will my child need general anaesthesia?
+
Yes β€” children have squint surgery under general anaesthesia. This is very safe in experienced hands. The anaesthesia team will assess your child beforehand. The surgery itself is short β€” typically 30–60 minutes β€” and children usually recover from the anaesthetic within a few hours and go home the same day.
What if one surgery is not enough?
+
It is not uncommon to need a second procedure to achieve the ideal alignment β€” this is not a failure of the surgery or the surgeon. Eye muscle surgery involves biological healing responses that are not always perfectly predictable. Dr. Sobti will set realistic expectations before surgery and discuss the likelihood of further treatment in your specific case.
Will my child still need glasses after squint surgery?
+
Usually yes β€” if glasses were prescribed before surgery, they will continue to be needed afterwards. Surgery corrects the muscle alignment. Glasses correct the refractive error (long-sightedness etc.) which may have contributed to the squint. Both treatments address different aspects of the same problem.
Is squint surgery safe for children?
+
Yes. Squint surgery is one of the most commonly performed elective eye surgeries worldwide, including in young children. In the hands of an experienced, AIIMS-trained surgeon like Dr. Sobti, the procedure has an excellent safety record. Serious complications are rare. The risks of not treating a significant squint β€” permanent amblyopia and lost binocular function β€” far outweigh the surgical risks.
I am 40 years old with a squint I have had since childhood. Is it too late?
+
No β€” it is not too late. While the goals differ from childhood surgery (we cannot treat amblyopia in adults), squint surgery in adults very effectively corrects the eye alignment, improves appearance, eliminates double vision where present, and in some cases restores binocular function. Many adults who have surgery say they wish they had done it years ago.
How soon after surgery will the eyes look straight?
+
Often immediately β€” patients wake from surgery with noticeably straighter eyes. There will be redness and swelling for 1–2 weeks which gradually settles. The final alignment can take 6–8 weeks to fully stabilise as the eye muscles adapt and heal. Follow-up appointments during this period allow Dr. Sobti to monitor progress carefully.
