When Is Extraction Necessary?

We Only Recommend Extraction When Necessary

Saving a natural tooth is always our first preference. Extraction is recommended only when the tooth cannot be saved or when it is causing harm to neighbouring teeth.

🦠
Severe decay beyond restoration

When decay has destroyed too much tooth structure for any restoration — filling, crown, or root canal — to reliably save the tooth.

🦷
Advanced gum disease

Severe periodontitis that has destroyed the supporting bone to the point where the tooth cannot be stabilised.

😤
Impacted wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth that cannot erupt correctly — causing pain, infection, or damage to the tooth in front. Removal is recommended when problems occur or are very likely.

📐
Orthodontic space creation

Creating space for other teeth to move into position may require removal of specific teeth as part of an orthodontic treatment plan.

👶
Baby teeth blocking permanent ones

A retained baby tooth preventing the permanent tooth from erupting correctly requires removal to allow normal development.

Types of Extraction

Simple vs Surgical Extraction

The type of extraction depends on the tooth's position and condition.

01
Local Anaesthesia

The tooth and surrounding area are fully anaesthetised. Dr. Sobti waits until you feel nothing. This step is never rushed.

02
Simple Extraction

For teeth visible above the gum line. The tooth is loosened with a dental elevator and removed with forceps. 10–20 minutes. Minimal post-operative discomfort.

03
Surgical Extraction

For wisdom teeth, broken teeth, or teeth below the gum line. A small incision is made for access. Local anaesthesia; sedation available for anxious patients. More post-operative discomfort than simple extraction — managed with prescribed medication.

04
After-Care

Gauze to bite on. Rest for the remainder of the day. Soft foods for a few days. Avoid smoking. Prescribed pain relief and antibiotics if indicated.

💡

After extraction: An empty socket can cause adjacent teeth to shift and bone to shrink. If the extracted tooth is in the visible smile zone or affects chewing, replacement with an implant or bridge should be discussed at the time of extraction.

FAQs

Extraction — Common Questions

Is tooth extraction painful?
+
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia — you feel pressure and movement but no sharp pain. If you feel anything sharp during the procedure, tell Dr. Sobti immediately — more anaesthetic will be given. Post-operative soreness for 2–4 days is normal and managed with standard pain relief.
How long does recovery take?
+
Simple extractions: most patients are back to normal within 2–3 days. Surgical extractions (wisdom teeth): 3–7 days with some swelling and more significant soreness. Prescribed medication manages this effectively.
My wisdom tooth is not painful. Does it still need to come out?
+
Not necessarily — a wisdom tooth that is fully erupted, properly aligned, and healthy does not need to be removed. Dr. Sobti will assess with X-rays and advise based on the specific position, alignment, and risk to adjacent teeth.
