A Word on Stigma

Mental Health in India Still Carries Stigma It Does Not Deserve

People with mental health conditions are often told to simply try harder, pray more, or wait it out. This is not advice β€” it is a dismissal of a medical reality.

Depression, anxiety, OCD, psychosis, sleep disorders β€” these are conditions with identifiable causes, effective treatments, and measurable outcomes. They respond to proper psychiatric care just as diabetes responds to insulin or blood pressure responds to medication.

Dr. Neha Dua Sobti's entire approach is built around dismantling stigma β€” with privacy, respect, and evidence-based care delivered without judgment. She will not rush you. She will not dismiss you. She will listen properly before concluding anything.

FAQs

Psychiatry β€” Common Questions

Is visiting a psychiatrist the same as being "mentally ill"?
+
No. People visit psychiatrists for a wide range of reasons β€” from life stress and sleep problems to relationship difficulties and exam anxiety. A psychiatrist is a medical specialist who helps people understand and manage anything affecting their mental health and wellbeing. Visiting one does not mean you have a serious mental illness any more than visiting a cardiologist means you have heart failure.
Will anyone find out I visited a psychiatrist?
+
No. Your consultation is completely confidential. Nothing you share is disclosed to family members, employers, or anyone else without your explicit written consent. The only exception would be an immediate risk to your safety or someone else's β€” which Dr. Sobti would discuss with you directly before taking any action.
Does psychiatric treatment always involve medication?
+
Not always. Treatment depends entirely on the condition and its severity. Many people benefit significantly from psychotherapy and lifestyle changes alone. Where medication is recommended, Dr. Sobti explains exactly what it is, what it does, what side effects to watch for, and how long it is likely to be needed. Nothing is prescribed without a clear explanation and your agreement.
How long does psychiatric treatment take?
+
It varies enormously by condition and individual. Acute anxiety or a situational depression may respond significantly within weeks. Chronic conditions like OCD, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia require long-term management. Dr. Sobti will give you a realistic timeline at your first appointment β€” not a vague or evasive one.
I am not sure if what I am experiencing is serious enough to see a psychiatrist. What should I do?
+
Come in. There is no minimum severity required to deserve professional support. If what you are experiencing is affecting your sleep, your work, your relationships, or your enjoyment of life β€” that is enough reason to seek help. Dr. Sobti will assess the situation honestly and tell you whether specialist treatment is needed or whether simpler support is sufficient.
Can I bring a family member with me to the appointment?
+
Yes β€” and for some conditions (particularly in elderly patients or severe illness) it is actively helpful to have a family member present, at least for part of the consultation. For others, having a private one-to-one with Dr. Sobti first is more appropriate. Let us know your preference when booking and we will structure the appointment accordingly.
