Common Questions

Eye Care FAQs

Answers to the questions patients ask most before their first appointment.

Is LASIK suitable for everyone?
+
No β€” suitability depends on corneal thickness, prescription range and eye health. We perform a thorough pre-operative assessment including corneal mapping before recommending any procedure. If LASIK is not right for you, we will say so honestly and discuss alternatives like SMILE or ICL.
Is cataract surgery painful?
+
No. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic eye drops β€” no injections in most cases. You are awake but feel nothing sharp or uncomfortable. Most patients say the anticipation was worse than the procedure. Vision improves significantly by the next morning.
What is the difference between LASIK and SMILE?
+
LASIK creates a thin flap on the cornea before reshaping. SMILE is flapless β€” the correction is made entirely inside the cornea through a tiny incision. SMILE causes less dry eye and leaves the cornea structurally stronger, making it better for active patients or those with dry eye tendencies.
Is cataract surgery covered under ECHS?
+
Yes. Cataract surgery with IOL implantation is covered under ECHS for eligible patients. Get a referral from your nearest ECHS Polyclinic, bring your ECHS smart card, and we handle the rest. Call 98176-33316 to confirm coverage for your specific situation.
My power is very high β€” can I still get rid of glasses?
+
Very likely yes β€” even if laser surgery is not suitable. ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) can treat up to -20D myopia and +10D hyperopia. It does not require removing any corneal tissue, is reversible, and many patients say the visual quality is even sharper than laser surgery.
I have diabetes. How often should I get my eyes checked?
+
Every year without exception β€” even if your vision seems perfectly fine. Diabetic retinopathy causes no symptoms until it is at an advanced stage. An annual dilated retinal examination can prevent the vast majority of diabetes-related blindness.
At what age can children have their eyes tested?
+
From as early as 6 months if there is a family history of squint or refractive error. All children should have a routine eye examination by age 3 and before starting school. Many vision problems β€” if caught early β€” can be fully corrected.
How long does recovery take after LASIK?
+
Most patients see clearly by the morning after LASIK and return to desk work within 2–3 days. Driving is usually possible by day 7. Avoid swimming for one month. Final vision stabilises over 1–3 months, though most improvement happens in the first week.
